Lucia Crown

  • $15.95

Celebrate the feast of St. Lucy on December 13 in a most traditional way!

According to legend, St. Lucy brought food and aid to Christians hiding in the catacombs. She had a candle-lit wreath on her head in order to light her way and to leave her hands free to carry as much food as possible.

Many cultures, especially Swedish and Italian, celebrate the feast day by having a girl, representing St. Lucy, who wears a white gown with a red sash and a crown of candles on her head. She walks at the head of a procession of girls, each holding a candle. The candles symbolize the fire that refused to take St. Lucy's life when she was sentenced to be burned.

Introduce this lovely tradition in your own family!  On December 13, have your daughter or granddaughter wake up the household with hymns and offer them seasonal pastries. Imagine the joy and excitement!

Traditional crown shape with five battery-operated candles is fully adjustable for the youngest child through adults. Green plastic adjustable headband with 4 1/4" high, white candles. The height is 7" once the candles are in place.

For a fuller, wreath-like effect, add your own evergreens such as boxwood, or strands of fragrant eucalyptus (in lieu of the traditional lingonberry). You could also add colored ribbons: red (the color of fire and blood, for St. Lucy's martyrdom), green (for hope and growth), and white ( for her purity) to personalize your crown.

Needs 5 AA batteries, not included.

Imported from Sweden.
